Sweden has stepped up surveillance of suspicious vessels by detaining the ship Jin Hui, identified as part of the so-called “shadow fleet” linked to Russia.
The action was carried out by the Coast Guard in cooperation with the police after the vessel was identified in Swedish waters.
The interception took place in the afternoon of the same day, when the ship was heading toward the Baltic Sea. According to information from broadcaster SVT, the Jin Hui was approached near Trelleborg, in the south of the country. After being detained, the vessel began being towed to an anchorage point, where it will undergo a more detailed investigation.
The case adds to a series of recent operations carried out by Swedish authorities. In just a few days, this is already the fifth vessel targeted for inspection. In late April, the country had already seized the cargo ship Caffa, accused of irregularly transporting Ukrainian grain from areas under Russian occupation.
Maritime tracking data indicates that the Jin Hui operates under the Syrian flag and is linked to a company registered in the Marshall Islands, raising suspicions about the transparency of its ownership. The tanker, currently empty, is capable of transporting oil and chemical products and is already under sanctions imposed by different countries and international blocs.
